Despite three hours of public comment at its Aug. 10 meeting, the Fayette County Board of Commissioners rejected a request to reconsider its July 13 decision to change its animal shelter ordinance.

Members of local humane societies and rescue groups asked the commission to form a volunteer advisory committee to guide policies regarding animals at the shelter and a trap-neuter-return program for stray cats. Commissioner Steve Brown’s motion to pursue a new policy based on earlier citizen input failed for lack of a second. County Administrator Steve Rapson outlined possible expansion options for the shelter, and shelter director Jerry Collins said the facility would increase its designated capacity threshold to 85 percent.
