The East Point Municipal Court will offer an amnesty period for people wishing to resolve unpaid fines and fees with little or no penalties. The time period will be from Feb. 19 to March 19.

The purpose of granting ticket amnesty is to give people who failed to appear in court on their scheduled court date an opportunity to pay unpaid court fines without additional fees or fear of being detained for outstanding warrants, associated with traffic citations.

Tickets that qualify for amnesty are any unpaid fines and fees to the court, as well as citations for failures to appear and warrants for traffic violations.

The amnesty program benefits East Point Municipal Court by allowing it to close out old cases. In addition, each warrant registered to the Georgia Crime Information Center is subject to review and validation on a monthly basis. Closing out cases reduces the number of cases the court has to validate. Furthermore, fewer warrants means a reduction in the number of individuals jailed which further reduces the cost of housing inmates. This also decreases the number of hours police officers have to spend on serving warrants for failures to appear, which frees them to work more serious cases.

During the amnesty period, anyone with an outstanding balance or warrant with the City of East Point can pay their ticket and settle any delinquencies without additional penalty or fear of incarceration. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays at the East Point Municipal Court, 2727 East Point St.
