As part of an evaluation for future 2017 SPLOST funding, the Duluth Police met recently with the City Council to discuss a proposal for a more robust camera network.

The citywide camera system would incorporate a combination of fixed, pan tilt zoom, and license plate recognition cameras to allow police to patrol large areas of the city remotely. The license plate recognition cameras will capture tag data and alert police if vehicles wanted or on watch lists enter the city or parks.

Plan A would include the purchase of 90 fixed cameras, 14 pan tilt zoom, 17 license plate recognition cameras, with 3 server locations, and 10 rapid deployable cameras for the most comprehensive coverage. Plan B involves 26 fixed cameras, 4 PTZ, and 17 ALPR.

The Duluth City Council authorized further study of all options and asked for specific cost factor and maintenance fees before making any decisions.
