The Duluth City Council will consider a proposed amendment to the alcohol ordinance to revise the distance between businesses selling packaged malt beverages and wine. The city has received an inquiry regarding locating a new package store within 50 yards of another business licensed to sell alcoholic beverages.

Currently the city ordinance prohibits the sale of malt beverages or wine, or both, for retail by the package if the proposed location is within 50 yards of any business similarly licensed unless that business is a hotel. State law does not prohibit.

Duluth’s Alcohol Board recommends eliminating the 50-yard distance requirement with a 4-1 vote. The Duluth City Council will vote on the recommendation at the next city council meeting Nov. 14.
