Speeders be warned. The Duluth City Council voted recently to award a contract for a photo enforcement program for speed violations near school zones in the city. The decision follows a recent traffic study that caught thousands of drivers speeding 15 mph over the speed limit in school zones. Duluth Middle School and Mason Elementary had the highest number of speeders.
The contract approved by Gwinnett County DOT and Gwinnett County Public Schools proposes to utilize a public private partnership with Redspeed Georgia, LLC for enactment of the program.
The city will provide a presentation outlining the contract terms and public education strategy prior to the photo enforcement program going live. Violators will receive a warning by mail during a 30-day rollout phase. The police department has authority to remove batches of tickets prior to them being mailed if the cameras are found to be issuing tickets when school is not in session.
