Authorities have recovered the body of a 23-year-old Atlanta man who drowned Sunday in Lake Allatoona.

Nicholas Alexander was at the lake with his parents Sunday afternoon when he dove off a rental boat near the Red Top Mountain State Park beach and didn’t make it to shore, according to Sgt. Mike Barr with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.

DNR spokesman Rick Lavender said the boat was about 75 feet from shore when Alexander asked how deep the water was and was told it was deep.

“He jumped in and according to accounts was swimming fine initially,” Lavender said. “Then he began to struggle.”

Lavender said two people on shore tried unsuccessfully to reach Alexander. His body was recovered shortly after 6 p.m. in about 30 feet of water.

“At this point in DNR’s investigation, there is no indication drugs or alcohol played any part in the incident,” Lavender said.
