After months of input, Decatur is presenting a draft master plan for the old United Methodist Children’s Home property 6-8 p.m., June 27 at the Ebster Gym, 105 Electric Ave, Decatur.

The city unveiled three concepts for the 77-acre site back in April, and it’s anticipated that Wednesday’s draft is, in part, a hybrid of those. The city reports the master planning process has generated over 3,000 public comments, suggestions and ideas.

Of the three original options the first included the lowest housing density—housing in each option is plotted for the southern or Katie Kerr Drive portion of the property. Concept 1 also includes refurbishing the existing playing fields and perhaps adding a baseball field.

Concept 2 adds more housing and a more recreational-intense portion with a track and field and tennis courts. Concept 3 has the most housing and turns the entire recreational portion into open green space

Kyle Reis, an associate principal with city consultant Cooper Carry, said back in May, “The three biggest themes that we heard from the community are affordable housing, a track and field, and open green space.”

Cooper Carry hopes to finish the master plan in July with the city commission voting on a final master plan by August or September.
