“Don’t Block the Box” in Atlanta, especially on Peachtree Street.
The city has announced stepped-up monitoring and ticketing by Atlanta police of drivers who block the box by entering intersections before traffic ahead clears, and staying there after the traffic light turns red.
The campaign identifies six street and 19 intersections that will get particular attention.
Peachtree alone has 12, from Trinity Avenue on the south to North Avenue on the north – essentially, its entire length downtown. Other intersections are 10th Street at Monroe Drive and Williams and Spring streets; Central Avenue at Mitchell Street and at Trinity; Edgewood Avenue at Bell Street, and 5th Street at Spring Street.
The intersections will get new striping and don’t-block signage, though motorist should expect to see enforcement citywide. Blocking the box is illegal under state law and can bring fines of up to $500 as well as points on one’s driving record, the city says.
