To show appreciation for the four-legged law enforcement officers, DeKalb County officials are seeking to raise money for a K-9 memorial statue. The projected cost of $10,000 includes a walkway of engraved pavers with the K-9’s name and service years that will lead citizens to the monument. Special donors will be identified on top of the granite slab that the dog statue will be mounted upon and other donors will be recognized in the celebration program.
The DeKalb County Police Alliance is accepting all donations through their organization’s 501(c)3 account. Plans for the memorial began after a discussion between a DeKalb K-9 officer Mark Taylor and Xan Rawls, DeKalb’s Animal Services Director after the passing of the officer’s K-9 companion.
The monument will be located on the hill where the current police headquarters signage is, overlooking the projected police and firefighter monuments. It is purposefully located behind the other monuments as dogs always have officer’s backs. The statue and memorial are to be dedicated May 15 as part of the observance of the 100th year of DeKalb County Police Services.
