The National Association of Counties has honored DeKalb County for its recent landfill conversion project and a toilet retrofit program.

The programs won the group's 2012 Achievement Awards for their efforts to better serve residents.

The landfill project is the first in the nation to convert methane from the dump into compressed natural gas and renewable natural gas, for vehicles and pipeline injection, respectively.

The toilet retrofit offered rebates to those in individually metered homes to replace up to three aging toilets with low-flow models to save water.
