Decatur’s longtime and popular city clerk Janet Kindelberger has retired, effective earlier this month, with the city subsequently promoting two veteran staffers in a slight reorganization.

Meredith Roark, with the city for 11 years, transfers from Budget and Performance Manager to City Clerk. Though still involved with budget support, she’s now responsible for records keeping, elections and certification of documents.

Russ Madison, 10 years with Decatur, most recently as Revenue and Technology Director, is now Finance Director. His duties include managing the revenue and accounting divisions of the city’s Administrative Services Department but, according to City Manager Peggy Merris, he’ll “still have a hand in technology and revenue.”

The city will also hire a staff accountant and plans to start recruiting in the near future.

“In the end the number of positions remain the same,” Merriss said. “We have two people changing titles and responsibilities. This is an opportunity to find the most efficient use of the organization given the talents we have.”
