Four modular units recently arrived at Decatur’s Winnona Park Elementary and have gotten their domestic water tie-in with DeKalb County.

Initially the trailers were going to occupy roughly 1,200 square feet on the northern edge of the school’s playing field. Many living nearby, however, were upset the trailers would reside on the school’s green space.

During a city commission meeting in May nine residents spoke against the proposed location, and one presented a petition with 126 signatures protesting the site.

The commission subsequently insisted the modulars get placed on the adjacent parking lot, which is where they are now. This may present an auxiliary dilemma. Winnona Park’s total parking is now cut from 30 to about six. Next year, therefore, most teachers will have to park all day on the already-crowded neighborhood streets.

Last year the K-3 school shattered it’s all-time enrollment record with 484 students.

City Schools Decatur now has a total 30 modulars district wide: 8 at Winnona Park, 4 at Oakhurst Elementary, 4 at Glennwood Elementary, 10 at the 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue and 4 at Decatur High. All 12 are getting removed from Renfroe Middle this summer, along with 12 at the high school.

Superintendent David Dude says he hopes to eliminate all modulars after the 2018-19 school year.
