Earlier this week planners gave a detailed presentation of Decatur High school’s projected $49 million overhaul before city commissioners. One commissioner, Kecia Cunningham, expressed dismay that “a lot of greenspace is disappearing for so much parking.” But in fact, when the project’s completed there will be a total 285 parking spaces, only slightly more than the current 259. Meantime Decatur High’s projected to more than double its present enrollment by 2019-20. “Normally for a school of this size,” Program Manager Jeff Prine said, “we’d have 400 to 500 parking spaces.”
The high school’s garden plots will be turned into a parking lot by community workers 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Sugar Creek Garden, 415 East Lake Drive, Decatur. The garden’s being paved over for parking, part of the redesign and new construction on Decatur High. Volunteers are encouraged to help. Contact Diane Loupe at dloupe@mindspring.com, or 404-374-3990.
