DeKalb winners to be announced
DeKalb State Court Judge Eleanor Ross will announce winners of the Division V Art Challenge Contest for middle school and high school students in the DeKalb School System 4 p.m. Monday in Courtroom 3C of the DeKalb County Courthouse, 556 N. McDonough St., Decatur.

DeKalb History Center to host children’s event
Parents can drop off children at DeKalb History Center from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 20 for “Night at the Museum,” while the adults shop or dine in downtown Decatur.
Activities for children ages 7 to 12 include storytelling, a magic performance, a craft event and a light snack at the center in the Old Courthouse on the Square.
Cost: $5 for center members and $10 for nonmembers.

Business group collects for backpacks
Members and guests of the West Cobb Business Association are asked to bring unopened packages of new socks or underwear or a pair of tennis shoes or sneakers to the 11:15 a.m. Tuesday luncheon at Lost Mountain Baptist Church, 5400 Old Dallas Road, Powder Springs.
These and other items will be used by OFH Clothing for a Cause of Powder Springs to fill backpacks this month for Cobb school children in need.

Bogan Aquatic Center to undergo renovation
Commissioners have approved a major renovation of the 15-year-old Bogan Park Aquatic Center. The project includes new roof panels, new HVAC and filtration systems and locker room renovations to improve operational and energy efficiencies. Funding for the $3.15 million renovation comes from the 2005 SPLOST program. The aquatic center will close in February and reopen in September. Visit www.gwinnettparks.com for more information. Extension Service plant sale taking orders
The Gwinnett Cooperative Extension Service has announced March 21 as the date for their very popular 2013 Plant Sale featuring blueberries, raspberries, figs, apples, camellias, azaleas and much more all locally grown. Pre-paid orders are being accepted now through March 12 at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. Henry schools’ 2013-14 calendar proposed
The Henry County School System has released its proposed 2013-14 calendar for public comment. Under the new plan the first day of school is Aug. 5, and fall break would move from September to the second week of October.
The new calendar is based on a 175-day school year with six furlough days for administrators and five furlough days for other employees.
