Replicas of the Confederate flag are flying again — on the graves of Civil War veterans at a cemetery in Brunswick, the Florida Times-Union reported.
On the day before Thanksgiving, five volunteers from a chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans placed the flags on the 78 graves from which they were removed in August, the paper reported.
Robert M. Gindhart III, president of the Oak Grove Cemetery Society, confessed to taking the flags and respectfully retiring them, saying in a letter that the flags "… quickly became a casualty to the elements and vandals."
However, Hal Crowe, a SCF official who was among Wednesday’s volunteers, said, “I’ve been saying the issue isn’t the cost of the flags. It’s the principle.”
Brunswick is about 300 miles southeast of Atlanta.
