Allowing backyard chickens in Cobb may involve more oversight because of Tuesday’s vote by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

They voted 4-1, with Commissioner Bob Ott opposed, to go with the Cobb Planning and Zoning Commission’s recommendation for a temporary land use permit and review by both the planning and zoning commission and the board for residents wanting chickens on less than two acres.

Fees would remain the same at $150 for the permit application and $100 for the renewal.

Two more public hearings will be held by the commissioners at 9 a.m. March 8 and 7 p.m. March 22 on whether to require the land use permit since this change would affect the county code.

Ott said he favored having applicants apply to the variance board without having to go to the commission and the board of commissioners.

During the public comment portion, Doug Davis of the East Cobb Civic Association said his organization supported the planning and zoning commission’s recommendation for the land use permit with public hearings by both the commission and the board.
