East Cherokee Drive at Tripp Road will be reconstructed as part of a $689,393 project to fix what one Cherokee County official described at a commissioner’s meeting as “a very awkward intersection on a very busy road.”

The Cherokee Board of Commissioners awarded the construction contract to Bartow Paving Co., which submitted the lowest bid of seven received, staff said. The intersection is between Woodstock and unincorporated Hickory Flat.

“The Tripp Road approach will be realigned to East Cherokee Drive to provide better sight distances with separate right-turn and left-turn lanes,” according to a staff report to commissioners.

Also, an exclusive southbound left-turn lane and northbound right-turn lane from East Cherokee to Tripp will be provided, and the intersection will get a traffic signal.

Construction is expected to take about 180 days.
