The Cherokee County Board of Education has put off a decision to demolish two buildings on its downtown Canton property to build new administrative offices.

The decision came after the city of Canton proposed swapping the land on which the former grammar school and cotton office buildings sit with acreage the city owns on Bluffs Parkway north of the Cherokee County Administration Building. City officials say that would save the two historic buildings from the wrecking ball.

The Cherokee County Historical Society has also offered to purchase the land and buildings near Main and Academy streets for $300,000.

The school board plans to take the issue up again March 19. School officials will meet meantime with the historical society and Canton officials to talk about incorporating facets of the existing buildings into a new complex. District officials will also negotiate a proposed land swap contract with the city, and will advertise for bids on buying the so-called A and B buildings and surrounding property.
