The winners of the 4th Cherokee County Mayors’ Recycling Challenge have been announced by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber officials said the city of Woodstock captured the award for most recycled materials during June and July at 460,146 pounds. For the fourth consecutive year, the city of Waleska collected the most per capita at 111.39 pounds per resident. Canton was recognized as having the highest percentage increase of collected recyclables over the previous year. The city gathered 260,584 pounds — a 64 percent rise.
In all, 930,630 pounds of recycled materials was hauled in, a 13 percent jump from 2014.
The contest is sponsored by the chamber’s Going Green initiative and by North Metro Waste and is aimed at encouraging both green practices and thriving businesses.
