In a school district where nearly one-third of students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals, Cherokee County schools are expanding their after-school healthy snack program.

In addition to the five schools already participating, beginning this week the program is offered at Ball Ground Elementary and Holly Spring Elementary STEM academies and at Clayton and Knox elementary schools, district officials said.

Later this fall, the program will be expanded to Cherokee and Etowah high schools and E.T. Booth Middle School.

The federally funded initiative is for eligible students participating in regularly scheduled after-school educational or enrichment activities, such as the district’s After School Program, tutoring and extra-curricular clubs.

“We want to do our part to ensure that every child is ready to learn, and that includes not being distracted by hunger,” said Brian V. Hightower, Cherokee schools superintendent.
