Someone walking along Friendship Road near Waleska on Wednesday found two pit bull mix breed dogs dead near an abandoned home.

Now, the Cherokee County Marshal’s Office is seeking the public’s help in finding the responsible party.

The dogs were found on the ground positioned to face each other, Cherokee County Chief Marshal Ron Hunton said.

Hunton said the male dog was about 3 to 5 years old and had scars from healed wounds on its face and a “crudely made brace strapped to its front leg with duct tape.”

The female dog has no such scars, but Hunton said there were obvious signs of trauma and the dogs may have been used for fighting.

The male dog suffered a puncture wound to the left eye and had been impaled with an object, Hunton said. A veterinarian examined the animals and said they had both been shot.

Hunton said any suspect or suspects will face at least two counts of felony aggravated animal cruelty.

Because the 15-month-old female dog had recently been spayed and pink/red suture was used, police are asking local veterinarians if they recognize the animal or provided the service.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cherokee Marshal’s Office at 678.493.6210.
