The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has awarded a $409,933 contract for the design/build of the veterans’ monument at Cherokee Veterans Park in Canton.

WE Contracting submitted the lowest of three bids for the project, which will be funded in part by the sale of commemorative bricks to those wishing to honor individual veterans. Proceeds also will to toward the monument’s upkeep.

Plans for the monument call for a flag pole at the center surrounded by a star-shaped court representing the nation’s service branches, and a Reflection Lawn and POW/MIA Plaza.

The design, approved last fall by county commissioners, resulted from meetings the previous summer involving architect Lose & Associates, county staff and a steering committee of military veterans.

Veterans Park is one of the largest in the county park system and opened last August on 149 aces at 7345 Cumming Highway. Information: https://bit.ly/2aAexO9
