The Georgia Department of Transportation awarded Chamblee with a Roadside Enhancement and Beautification Council grant of $44,445. Grant funds are allocated towards purchasing and installing plant material along streets. The city will use the grant for beautification of the area around the city’s monument sign on Peachtree Boulevard.
Since 2008, GDOT has awarded 143 grants totaling more than $5.5 million to local governments in Georgia. The program uses revenue from permit fees paid to GDOT by outdoor advertising companies. Any local government may apply for a grant of up to $50,000. Awarded funds may be used for landscape plant material, sod, topsoil and labor costs. A local commitment to long-term maintenance is required and the state agency encourages the use of Georgia grown materials for projects.
