The Greyhound bus station in downtown Atlanta was evacuated for over an hour early Monday after a grenade was found.
“Apparently, the grenade fell out of a box that was being shipped to North Carolina along with other miscellaneous items,” Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said in an e-mail.
Forsyth Street was closed while police investigated the incident, and trains on the nearby MARTA line were stopped.
The all-clear was sounded and passengers allowed back in the station and on buses about 6:20.
Jones said the grenade had been “hollowed out” and was deemed to be safe.
Marvin Greene was among the several hundred passengers evacuated from the station and pulled off buses.
“I was on the bus and they came on the bus and said everybody evacuate the bus,” said Greene, who was on his way from Florida to South Carolina to start a new job. “They said they found something suspicious, that’s all they told us.”
