The Brookhaven City Council on July 10 voted unanimously to give City Manager Marie Garrett the authority to move forward in negotiations to purchase property at 2600 Skyland Drive. The 5.3-acre tract of land, adjacent to Skyland Park, is owned by the State Building Authority, which would sell the property at its appraised value of $2.79 million. The land houses a 43,334-square-foot building that is currently being used by Georgia Vital Records and was once an elementary school. In the meantime, the Building Authority is willing to lease the property from the city for $223,200 annually until the city has determined how it will utilize the building. “This is an unprecedented opportunity for the city,” Mayor Rebecca Chase Williams said, “to acquire a valuable asset that will pay for itself.”

“This is a great potential spot for Brookhaven,” said Councilmember Bates Mattison. “This will be the first asset other than a park that the city will have under our financial umbrella.”
