A 7-year-old boy struck by a vehicle Sunday evening in DeKalb County has died.

DeKalb police told Channel 2 Action News that the boy, Zederick Carr, was walking with his stepfather and two siblings along Flat Shoals Parkway when he pulled away from his dad and stepped into traffic.

The stepfather told Channel 2 that they made it halfway when a car came at them in the turn lane. He said he tried to jerk Zederick out of the way, but his hand came loose and the car struck him.

"This is just devastating," Tiffany Isaac, the boy's mother, told Channel 2.

Isaac said she left her son with the stepfather so she could go to work. He was bringing the boy and his siblings home when the incident happened.

"I sent him out of here at 9 p.m.," Isaac said. "I saw him that morning, and he was gone that night. I can't believe it."

The group was trying to cross the road to the Serenade Apartments where the boy's mother lives. There is not a crosswalk or crossing signal in the area where the accident occurred.

Family members told Channel 2 they plas to ask the county to install a crosswalk along that stretch of Flat Shoals Parkway so this doesn't happen to another family.

While investigators have not said whether charges will be filed, DeKalb police Lt. Dane Cunningham told Channel 2 that there may have been nothing the driver could have done to avoid the accident.
