Avondale Estates’ commission is adding one special called meeting per month dedicated solely to development. Mayor Jonathan Elmore anticipates the extra session will be used for at least the next three to six months. The first is 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 21 North Avondale Plaza.
The city commission holds one regular meeting per month, usually on the last Monday, typically a perfunctory approval of agenda items lasting roughly a half hour. Most in-depth discussions by the commission occur during work sessions held the Wednesday prior to each regular meeting. These can last for three hours or more, often dominated by singularly long public comment interludes.
Elmore’s goal is to keep these special called sessions at strictly two hours. Initially they will deal with how to coordinate the four downtown acres owned by the city with the 13 acres just north of downtown owned by Avila Real Estate.
“We have a lot of stuff to decide [regarding] those 17 acres,” Elmore said, “because we want the whole thing to be complimentary. I expect we’ll also be talking about downtown development too, and that we will be setting the standards for other development down the road.”
After this month, the development special session will be held the first Wednesday of the month.
