Avondale Estates’ planning and engineering consultants will give a public update on the U.S. 278 redesign, 6:30 p.m., Thursday at the Avondale Estates City Hall, 21 North Avondale Plaza.

This is considered a “priority project” in the 2014 Downtown Master Plan update, and could include a road diet — cutting U.S. 278 from four to two lanes, widening sidewalks and adding bike lanes — from Ashton Place to Sams Crossing. The redesign could also include a roundabout at the Clarendon Avenue/U.S. 278 intersection, although this is still very tentative.

Meanwhile, Decatur’s commission on Monday approved applying for a Liveable Centers Initiative grant that would, among others, help fund a similar road diet on College Avenue (also U.S. 278) from South Candler Street east to the Avondale city limits.
