Avondale Estates’ mayor and commissioners spent part of a recent work session discussing possible compensation for the five-member board.
According to research done by City Clerk Gina Hill, Avondale may be the state’s only city that doesn’t pay its board anything.
As recently as the 1980s Avondale commissioners were paid $50 annually according to former Commissioner Carolyn Chandler, but at some point that was discontinued.
Mayor Jonathan Elmore said the board may vote on a stipend, possibly in the $300 to $500 monthly range in April. But even if approved, the salary wouldn’t kick in until 2018.
Here’s a list of commission/mayor monthly stipends in Georgia cities with populations similar to Avondale Estates’ 3,360:
Tybee Island (population 3,000): commission $500 per month; mayor $700 per month; Alma (3,500), $400 and $800, Blackshear (3,500), $150 and $400; Ringgold (3,700) $300 and $500; Hiram (3,700); $250 and $750.
