The Austell Planning and Zoning Commission voted 7-0 Tuesday to recommend the approval of deannexing nearly eight acres to Cobb County.

This request came from Brent Green, concerning property at 5471, 5481, 5491 and 5521 Austell Road that is zoned R-15 (single family residential) within Austell and would retain that zoning in unincorporated Cobb.

Green said he would like to seek county grants to develop the property into a park in honor of his late mother.

The mayor and city council will hear and vote on the request 7 p.m. Dec. 1 in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 2716 Broad St.

Then the Georgia General Assembly would have to approve this request, Jim Graham, director of the city’s Community Development and Parks Departments.

The city also can use Community Development Block Grant funds from the county for parks with the county’s approval, Graham added.

Anyone wishing to speak in opposition must sign up one business day before the hearing at the Community Development Department, Suite 101, Austell Threadmill Complex.
