A Marietta attorney will be "sorely missed" after his fatal fall from a Midtown Atlanta sidewalk, colleagues said Monday.

Atlanta police believe James Freaney, 45, died Saturday morning after stumbling off a sidewalk near 21 8th St. and dropping “three to five feet” into the side of a building. The exact circumstances surrounding the fall remain murky, but authorities are treating it as an accidental death.

Freaney’s colleagues at Marietta law firm Frederick J. Hanna and Associates called him “a funny, gregarious and highly intelligent man” who loved his family, opera and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

“His knowledge and interests were not limited to the law,” the attorneys said in a emailed joint statement. “He had an incredible memory and was an avid reader. He was an enthusiastic participant in the Cobb Bar Association’s Trivia Game each year.”

A witness told police Freaney was in the area for a job interview. A law office is located inside the building where he fell.

Colleagues said Freaney had worked at Hanna and Associates for 10 years.

“He will always be remembered as a part of the Hanna Family,” their statement said.
