Atlanta Public Schools will undergo an outside audit of its record keeping related to graduates. Superintendent Erroll Davis ordered the audit after the district discovered 18 students incorrectly coded as graduates this year.

The audit will look at five years worth of graduation data. Davis said the district is examining why the 18 were misclassified.Principals are being told to place a higher priority on data.

“This is 18 people too many,” Davis said.

Atlanta Public Schools graduates about 2,000 students each year. Graduation rates are tracked by the federal government, and are considered a key indicator of a school and district’s success.
