There’s growing talk in the Atlanta-Fulton County Library System that the Central Library in Margaret Mitchell Square may have outlived its usefulness.

Library Board Chairman Stephanie Moody reportedly has recommended using some of the proceeds of a 2008 bond issue to buy land and build a new library to replace Central. The building opened in May 1980 and was renovated in 2002. It was the last designed by late Modernist architect Marcel Breuer and is listed on the 2010 World Monuments Watch List of Most Endangered Sites, according to the ArchitectsNewspaper website.

Opinions of the concrete structure range from those who consider it one of Breuer’s greatest works – there’s a MoveOn.org petition urging the library system to preserve the 265,000-square-foot building – to others who see it as cold and ugly.
