Alpharetta officials are trying a new approach to make the downtown area — and other parts of town — more walkable.

The Alpharetta City Council on Monday night, June 22 approved spending $1 million to fill in sidewalk gaps and construct bike lanes along several downtown thoroughfares, including portions of Academy, Canton and Marietta streets and Mayfield Road. Elsewhere, portions of Marconi Drive and Waters Road will also see new pavement.

City officials said that with this round of work, officials instituted a grading and prioritization system that includes such factors as location, how many homes and businesses are close to a non-sidewalked stretch and whether new sidewalks would connect to key amenities and facilities, such as transit stops. City staffers walked every sidewalk gap in the city to construct the database.

Officials said the work will be done between now and the end of June 2016.
