By July 8, the Robinson Street Improvements Project should be completed in Acworth.

This project has faced various delays and cost increases, according to Alex Almodóvar, assistant to Acworth City Manager Brian Bulthuis in an email to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Acworth Board of Aldermen approved this month a $123,563 increase “due to several change orders that were the result of unexpected conflicts that were outside the original design plan, resulting in both a fiscal impact as well as some time delays,” Almodóvar said.

Those conflicts included:

  • additional tree removals
  • addition of junction boxes to bypass elevation conflicts with other buried utilities (for example, potable water, cable, fiber-optic and phone lines)
  • expansion of concrete structures to achieve correct slope on pavement surfaces

The most costly change order of almost $98,627 was due to the unexpected dilapidated condition and undersize of a storm drain pipe that was noticed during excavation, Almodóvar said.

“Replacement of that pipe was not a part of the original scope but had to be done to achieve efficient, positive flow of the stormwater and to maintain the integrity of the roadway surface that it supports,” he added.

Almodóvar said, “Due to an abundance of rain between November 2019 and February 2020, weather delays and the additional work forced us to add an additional 65 days to the project, resulting in a new projected completion date of July 8.”

The improvements are on Robinson Street from Maple Drive to East Lakeshore Drive NW.

They include stormwater erosion control, traffic control, stormwater piping and conveyances, sidewalks, curb, gutter, driveway aprons, new asphalt pavements, roadway striping and landscaping.

Funding has come from the Local Maintenance & Improvement Grant and the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
