Henry County Commissioners nixed a request by Stockbridge officials to annex about 160 acres near Jodeco Road where a $300 million retail and residential project is slated to be built.

Henry County attorney Patrick Jaugstetter said the land may not meet the county’s requirement for contiguity because it doesn’t appear to join other property owned by the city of Stockbridge. Commission Chairman Tommy Smith also told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Stockbridge’s zoning “would not be compatible with surrounding neighbors.”

Smith was quick to add that the board supports the Jodeco Atlanta South project. The project will include shops, a food hall, homes, hotels, an amphitheatre, a wetland preserve and outdoor fitness and recreation space. The development will be in the center of activity along the well-traveled I-75 corridor, which is undergoing a $221 million transformation to relieve the traffic-choked thoroughfare that is a main corridor to Florida.

Stockbridge City Manager Michael Harrison could not be reached for comment.
