As The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported, Georgia GOP leaders have begun to embrace presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, some more enthusiastically than others.
But there was no hesitancy among Republican candidates in two key Gwinnett County legislative races.
“If Donald Trump’s the nominee, I’ll try to vote for him twice,” said candidate Clay Cox. “Anybody but Hillary Clinton.”
Cox is one of two Republicans seeking to replace retiring state Rep. B.J. Pak in Lilburn-area state House District 108. While he may have expressed his thoughts more colorfully than others, it seemed to be a common sentiment.
“If he is the Republican nominee for president, I will be voting for the Republican,” said Patricia Gabilondo, Cox’s opponent in the May 24 Republican primary for HD 108. “I believe in Republican values.”
Incumbent Rep. Joyce Chandler, R-Grayson, who is seeking re-election to District 105, also said she’d support Trump. So did her Republican opponent, David Crocker.
Some Gwinnett Democrats see opportunity in Trump’s candidacy. Given some of his statements about immigrants and Muslims, they think Trump could motivate a big turnout for Democrats in November.
“When I knock on doors, the first thing they ask me is, `are you a Democrat?’” said Donna McLeod, who is seeking the Democratic nomination in HD 105. “They are deadly afraid of what he represents as a face of the United States of America.”
