Super Tuesday is more than two weeks away but 22,924 votes have already been cast in Georgia’s March 6 election, when the Republican presidential race and numerous local issues will be on the ballot.

Of those votes, 11,874 were cast in person at early voting stations, according to the Secretary of State’s office. And 11,050 were cast through the mail on absentee ballots.

There are still 12,850 mail-in ballots outstanding. Advance voting stations are set to remain open until March 2. They will also be open during a special Saturday session on Feb. 25.

A spokesman for the Secretary of State’s office said his agency does not have comparable voting statistics for the same period during the last presidential primary in 2008. But he said Georgians cast 247,897 votes early in that election.

Meanwhile, the number of registered voters in Georgia has increased by 516,448 since 2008, from 5.2 million to 5.7 million. A spokesman for the Secretary of State’s office said the increase was most likely related to the state’s population growth. Georgia’s population grew by 1.5 million since 2000, according to the 2010 census.

In Gwinnett County, 961 votes have been cast through the mail and at in-person polling stations, said KristiRoyston, deputy director of the county's Board of Voter Registration and Elections. The county did not have comparable information for the same period during the 2008 presidential primary race.
