Gwinnett County public school employees could get raises this year.

Gwinnett’s budget has not been released, but Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks said Thursday he’s planning to propose the school district’s 22,000 employees receive salary increases of about 3 percent. He also said the average teacher salary may rise by 3.8 percent.

Wilbanks made the comments during a school board meeting with several dozen teachers invited once a year to discuss challenging issues in their schools. He said Gwinnett's property tax digest is increasing, which would allow for the pay increases. Nearly all Gwinnett teachers received a similar salary increase last year.

The school board voted to approve last year’s budget in May. This year’s budget will likely be approved on a similar schedule.
