The Marietta-Roswell Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. recently awarded $50,000 in scholarships to deserving high school graduates in Cobb and North Fulton counties. Afoma Freda Okoye of Kennesaw Mountain High School received $15,000; Lauren Nicole Smith, also of Kennesaw Mountain, received $10,000; Desirae Yvonne Jeffrey of Walton High School received $8,000 and Kristen Paige Green of Walton received $7,000. Kara Chestnut and Gabrielle Jackson of North Springs High School each won $5,000 scholarships.

Woodward Academy team members Shaan Bhakta, Kevin Brown, Amy Kanchibhatla, Tori Lindelow, Natalie Milton, Diva Sharma and Cassie Van Orden recently won first place at the 2013 Odyssey of the Mind World Finals competition at Michigan State University. In the competition the "Tumble-wood" team built a structure made out of balsa wood and glue that was able to hold 135.16 pounds.

Beth Valentine, a teacher at Hapeville Elementary School in Hapeville, has been selected to participate in the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Summer Teacher Institute. Carlene Burris, a student at Babb Middle School in Forest Park, received a $500 academic scholarship from Bowen and Watson Contractors. The company has been working to renovate the school and worked with its principal to chose a scholarship recipient.

Nick Perry, a 6th grade student at Sandy Springs Charter Middle School in Sandy Springs, recently received a perfect score on this year's National Latin Exam. The exam tests students' ability to speak Latin. Nick was one of just 800 students across the world who received a perfect score. More than 20,000 students took the test. More than 75 students at the school earned medals including Trevor Langill and Chase McGrath in 8th grade, Daniel Lopez and Jhamel Harrison in 7th grade, and Nick Keou, Joshua Gray, Nicholas Lindsey, Madeline Berns, and William Fuss in 6th grade who all received gold medals.
