Police say a driver pulled over in Gwinnett County for making an illegal turn onto Duluth Highway last week turned out to have more of a story to tell than expected. Authorities say they’ve come to find out it wasn’t true.

When Willie Lamont Hicks was stopped on the afternoon of March 12 near Meadow Church Road, he initially refused to produce a driver’s license, saying he worked for a federal agency and had highly confidential documents inside the vehicle, police said.

He eventually turned over an international permit and a driver’s license from the Philippines, according to police, but it was determined that the temporary license plate on the vehicle was false and there was no valid insurance. A subsequent check showed that there was a warrant out for Hicks through Norcross police, and that was just the beginning.

Police suspect Hicks”may be involved in multiple fraudulent transactions involving cars, apartments, businesses and the federal government.”

Police said they found Hicks possessed fraudulent IDs and an “information kit” on how to conduct fraudulent scams. The White Collar Unit of the Criminal Investigations Division also had felony warrants out for Hicks and had been trying to locate him.

Hicks was arrested for forgery in the first degree and multiple other charges. Police said additional warrants may be coming, pending the outcome of their investigation.
