U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts said Thursday morning her oldest brother has died from coronavirus-related complications.

Warren, who recently ended her campaign for the White House, made the announcement on social media. Don Reed, Warren said, died Tuesday.

“I’m grateful to the nurses and frontline staff who took care of him, but it’s hard to know that there was no family to hold his hand or to say ‘I love you’ one more time—and no funeral for those of us who loved him to hold each other close. I’ll miss you dearly my brother," Warren said.

Reed, 86, died in Norman, Okla., about three weeks after testing positive for the virus.  He flew B-47 and B-52 bombers for the Air Force, and flew 288 combat missions in Vietnam.

He also served as a B-52 squadron pilot and a squadron aircraft commander before retiring in 1973 as a lieutenant colonel.

The global coronavirus pandemic continues to impact the United States and this year’s presidential election.

The man whom Warren wanted to replace in the White House, President Donald Trump, is aiming for a swift nationwide reopening. But on Thursday, new unemployment numbers were released showing 26 million Americans have filed unemployment claims during the last five weeks.

The new data comes as Trump and several GOP governors attempt to repair the American economic damage caused by the pandemic, and continue to face withering criticism from Democrats.

Warren's Senate colleague, Mitch McConnell, took a hard line Wednesday against giving cash-short states more federal aid in future emergency pandemic relief legislation, saying those suffering steep shortfalls amid the coronavirus crisis should instead consider bankruptcy.
