A nursing student is drawing attention after filing a lawsuit against Misericordia University in Pennsylvania.
Jennifer Burbella claims that the school violated the Federal Rehabilitation Act and is asking for at least $75,000 in unspecified damages, according to CitizensVoice.
According to the lawsuit, Burbella was admitted to the nursing program in 2010. She suffers from anxiety, depression and poor concentration.
Due to the anxiety that was generated by university life, Burbella admits to struggling academically, earning average to below-average grades.
When she failed one required course, Burbella claims she was pressured into retaking it and began failing the course again.
The lawsuit claims that the school did not do enough to accommodate Burbella’s special academic needs. During finals, the professor was supposed to be available for Burbella to ask questions, but Burbella claims she called the professor several times and no one answered.
Because Burbella failed the course again, she was unable to earn a nursing degree, the lawsuit alleges.
Burbella is no longer a student at the university.
