Heroin deaths may be spiking nationwide as Alpharetta police say but it still isn’t one of the top drugs for overdose deaths in Georgia, according to a report issued by the state Attorney General Thursday.

The report concluded that overdose death decreased overall while deaths related to illicit drugs increased in 2013. The report’s statistics did not include autopsies performed by medical examiners in Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, or Rockdale Counties.

There were 630 drug overdose deaths in 2013, down from 686 in 2012. There were 461 deaths that involved prescription drugs only in 2013, down from 520 the previous year. The analysis also showed that 106 drug overdose deaths in 2013 involved only illicit drug, up from 94 in 2012, and 63 deaths were attributed to a combination of both prescription and illicit drugs, down from 72 the previous year.
