The DeKalb County Police Department plans to discuss its achievements and ask the community for areas where it could improve at its first Q&A of 2021.

Police Chief Mirtha V. Ramos will host the virtual event, which will be broadcast at 6 p.m. Sunday on the department’s Facebook page. DeKalb residents will be able to submit questions before and during the live event.

“In the spirit of transparency and inclusiveness, we want to discuss our 2020 with the community, as well as our goals for 2021 as we hear from every unit that encompasses our department,” Ramos said in a news release.

The department’s last Q&A took place in September and mostly revolved around humanizing police officers and their connection with the community. The conversation came on the heels of widespread protests against racism and police brutality.

The protests raised questions about police offices’ trust within the communities and raised concerns about police morale. The Atlanta Police Department was at the center of those concerns, given reports of cratering morale among officers.

Sunday’s event will be Ramos’ third community Q&A since becoming the county’s first permanent female police chief in November 2019. Before taking over DeKalb’s police department, Ramos spent 22 years with the Miami-Dade Police Department in Florida.
