Suspect found dead after Gwinnett SWAT standoff

A four-hour SWAT standoff in northern Gwinnett County ended early Friday when the suspected gunman killed himself, police said.

The standoff began around 1 a.m. at a home in the 3500 block of Thompson Mill Road.

Police suspected a man involved in an aggravated assault in Braselton in which shots were fired was inside the home, Gwinnett police Cpl. Ed Ritter told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“Because of the fact that he was involved in an aggravated assault involving gunfire, we contacted our SWAT team,” Ritter said.

He said that after unsuccessfully attempting to contact the suspect, the SWAT team sent a robot into the house shortly before 5 a.m.

“The robot went through the house and discovered him inside of a bathroom dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Ritter said.

The suspect’s identity has not been released.
