An East Point-based company that operated the hotel shuttle bus involved in a serious wreck near the airport in May has been allowed back on the road, company and state officials said.

MTI Limos and Shuttles was taken out of operation by the state Department of Public Safety after local police cited the company for allowing an unsafe passenger vehicle on the road on the day of the crash. Sixteen people were injured, including the bus driver.

State officials found several safety violations of the company’s vehicles and suspended their operations until those violations were corrected.

“After the crash, we did terminal inspections on their vehicles,” said Lt. Wayne Mobley of the state Public Safety Department’s Motor Carrier Compliance Division. “Corrections had to be made and they had to be reinspected. Then they were reinstated.”

MTI spokeswoman Kimberly Krautter said company officials are anxious to resume operations.

“We are very appreciative of the loyalty and patience of our customers,” Krautter said.

On the afternoon of May 24, an MTI shuttle slammed into a tractor trailer making an illegal U-turn on Loop Road near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Police determined that the driver was improperly licensed to operate the bus and that the vehicle had bad tires and malfunctioning brakes.

The bus driver and the driver of the tractor trailer were charged by East Point police.

One family that was riding on the bus when the accident occurred sued MTI in June.
