A Lilburn teen was arrested Wednesday on accusations that he was carrying a handgun and hid it on the way to his high school, police said.
Demarcus Connell Lewis, Jr., 17, is charged with possession of a pistol or revolver by a person under the age of 18.
Lilburn police said Lewis was seen hiding a handgun in some bushes at a medical building next door to Berkmar High School.
Security video recorded from the school supported a witness’ assertion that Lewis hid the unloaded weapon then proceeded to the school building, authorities said.
Lewis told police he left his cousin’s home Wednesday morning and noticed while walking to school that his book bag was heavier than normal, according to Lilburn Police spokesman Capt. Thomas Bardugon.
Lewis looked in his bag and found the gun, police said, and hid it with the intention of retrieving it after school because he knew he wasn’t supposed to have it on campus.
“As far as we can determine, the pistol was never on campus, nor was it intended to be on campus,” Bardugon said.
It is unclear how the cousin got the handgun, police said.
