A police officer in southwest Georgia, who had been stabbed, fatally shot a man early Wednesday, according to a media report.

The Albany officer responded to a suspicious-person call shortly after 5 a.m., the Albany Herald reported. At some point, the officer was stabbed, and the officer shot a man, a police spokeswoman told the paper.

Albany is about 180 miles southwest of Atlanta.

The officer, a three-year veteran of the force, was released from a hospital, the paper reported. The man he shot died.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the case, which is standard protocol. The officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation is conducted, according to the report.
