One of two sexual assaults reported over the weekend at Georgia Gwinnett College was bogus, campus officials said Wednesday.
“Our investigation into the alleged assault in the parking lot adjacent to Building 3000 on the evening of September 9 … has revealed that in fact no such assault took place,” college President Dan Kaufman said in message released Wednesday to the campus. “There is no unknown assailant who might pose an imminent risk to the GGC community.”
“While we are relieved that there was no attack on a GGC student, the episode does remind us of the need to be watchful and vigilant,” Kaufman said.
The alleged female victim admitted to campus officials that “there was no attacker,” GGC spokeswoman Sally Ramey told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday evening.
GGC police are considering charging the woman who made the false claim, Ramey said.
The initial report said a light-skinned black male with muscular build and white shorts attacked a female student in the “B” parking lot sometime between 11:45 p.m. Sunday and 2:45 a.m. Monday as the victim walked to her car.
Based upon this report, the college officials believed the campus had experienced the second sexual assault in as many days.
Another victim reported being attacked early Sunday morning, college officials said.
Campus police arrested an 18-year-old man they described as a suspect early Monday. The man was charged with disorderly conduct and released later that morning on $439 bond. It was unclear how the disorderly conduct charge related to the sexual assault report, or if any more charges were pending.
College officials released a campus-wide alert late Monday morning in accordance with federal campus crime disclosure laws, and campus police beefed up security, seeking aid from Lawrenceville police.
